    Description

    1788 Miller 8-K Connecticut Copper, XF40
    Probably the Finest Known

1788 COPPER Connecticut, Mailed Bust Left, M. 8-K, W-4495, R.7, XF40 NGC. 117.0 grains. Obverse die 8 is identified only with this reverse. Reverse K is found also with obverse dies 4.1 and 7. Miller 8-K is nearly as rare as Miller 7-K, which we consider the rarest 1788 Connecticut in the Donald G. Partrick Collection. This piece is probably the finest known of the variety. When Robert Martin prepared notes on Connecticut coppers in conjunction with the 2000 offering of the Perkins Collection, he recorded 11 examples known of Miller 8-K. The present piece appeared at the top of that list, suggesting that Martin considered it the finest known. This example has impressive golden-brown surfaces with trivial marks that are expected for the grade. A thin line of planchet lamination is observed on the reverse. Both sides are free of porosity or corrosion. A nicely centered specimen with weakness at ONN due to die clashing. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Stack's (1950s); Frederick Taylor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1987), lot 2703; Donald G. Partrick.
