Description

1788 Vermont Copper, Good Details
Backward C in AUCTORI, RR-30
Famous Guide Book Rarity

1788 Vermont Copper, Backward C in AUCTORI, RR-30, Bressett 23-S, W-2225, R.6 -- Damaged -- NGC Details. Good. Ryder-30 with a retrograde C in AUCTORI is one of the three formidable stoppers to completion of a Guide Book collection of Vermont coppers, along with the 1785 Immune Columbia and the 1787 Bust Left. The diesinker for the obverse die was clearly less skilled than the maker of the reverse die, given the various unevenly spaced, misaligned, and repunched letters in VERMON AUCTORI. The present coin was struck moderately off center toward 2 o'clock, but the legends are mostly complete. Tan-brown high points contrast with deep gray fields. Listed on page 28 of the 2026 Guide Book.
