1792 Washington President Cent, VG Details
    Plain Edge, GENERAL Reverse, Baker-59

1792 CENT Washington President Cent, Plain Edge -- Plugged -- NGC Details. VG. Baker-59, W-10690, Musante GW-35, R.6. Ten years ago, numismatic conventional wisdom was that the American Armies Washington cent was engraved by John Gregory Hancock, Sr., and struck at the Westwood Mint in Birmingham, England. But the descendants of Massachusetts engraver Jacob Perkins were known to own the Washington Born Virginia obverse die, which is die-linked to the reverse of the present variety. Thus, Perkins struck the American Armies cents, imitating Westwood's 1791 Washington President cent obverse as a model. This example is plugged above the portrait. In the cataloger's opinion, the coin has the wear of a Very Fine example, with the central and lower reverse legends ill-defined due to the soft strike usual for the variety. Relevant contact is limited to a diagonal tick between the ON in WASHINGTON. Listed on page 84 of the 2020 Guide Book.
