Description

1794 Talbot, Allum, & Lee Cent
Near-Mint, Rare Fuld-3 Variety
Ex: Eliasberg, Regency Holder

1794 CENT Talbot, Allum, & Lee Cent, NEW YORK, AU58 PCGS. Fuld-3, W-8580, R.6. Ex: Eliasberg. Small ampersand. Fuld-3 is rarest among the four 1794 die marriages. It is considered even rarer than Fuld-1, the celebrated variety without NEW YORK. The pick-up point is the W in NEW, situated half left of the first L in ALLUM. The T in CENT is also widely repunched. Fuld-3 is invariably encountered in circulated grades, as the variety was absent from Uncirculated hoards of the early American token. This unmarked chocolate-brown example is pleasing despite occasional traces of verdigris. It has arguably the most desirable pedigree in numismatics, from the famous Eliasberg Collection. It was the only Talbot, Allum, & Lee cent offered in the 1996 Eliasberg sale. The lot is also noteworthy for its Regency holder. The oversized out-of-rectangular holder was seldom used due to its cost, and was offered only during the mid-1990s. The holder is rarely encountered today. Listed on page 78 of the 2020 Guide Book.
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 94.
