    Description

Gem 1795 Washington Large Buttons, Grate Halfpenny

1795 1/2P Washington Grate Halfpenny, Large Buttons, Reeded Edge MS65 Brown NGC. Baker-29AA, D&H Middlesex-283a, Breen-1271. The Washington Grate token is actually a British Conder token, but American collectors long ago adopted it as a piece of Washingtonia. The dies were engraved by Thomas Wyon. A mildly prooflike deep chocolate-brown representative with pleasing surfaces. Sharply struck aside from the top of Washington's hair and the ON in LONDON. A die break (as made) is noted on the F in FIRM, while the reverse dies are perfect aside from a few freckles of die rust, as struck. The dies are slightly rotated counterclockwise.(#746)
