Description

1796 Copper Castorland Jeton, MS65 Brown
First Restrike From Original Dies, W-9140

1796 Castorland Jeton, Bronzed Copper, MS65 Brown PCGS. W-9140, R.6. Plain Edge, per the PCGS insert. The Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia does not list a copper, Plain Edge restrike from original dies; the given W-9140 attribution is associated with Original Dies copper restrikes but the Whitman book entry (which may be incomplete) suggests a reeded edge. PCGS's coin numbers for Castorland varieties do not perfectly mesh with Chester Sullivan's research of the seven Original Dies types and have been inconsistently used by that service over the years. The current piece is an early Paris Mint restrike using both original dies. The reverse field is raised near 3 o'clock where the die is failing, and die rust accompanies the right handle of the vessel. Sullivan identifies this Original Dies variety as Type Four, Category Two: Medal turn alignment on a thin planchet, "...minted in the time period between April 21, 1802, and June 13, 1845." This is a magnificent Gem with prooflike fields and full mint gloss. Richly toned olive-brown throughout. Lightly strike doubled, most apparent on the peripheral legends. Listed on page 44 of the 2026 Guide Book.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 4019.
