1796-Dated Washington Repub Ameri Penny
GW-62, MS64 Brown CAC

1796-Dated Washington Repub Ameri Penny, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Baker-69, Breen-1278, GW-62. Ex: Garrett. Plain edge. 1732 below bust. Walter Breen believed Baker-69 was struck by Peter Kempson & Co. of Birmingham, England, in 1800 to commemorate Washington's death. Russell Rulau, though, stated it was struck in 1870 despite the erroneous date of Washington's death, and its close similarity to Baker-68. This is a sharply struck near-Gem with chocolate-brown and steel-gray toning. Marks are essentially absent, though we note a small spot northwest of Washington's head.
Ex: Garrett Collection, Part 4 (Bowers & Ruddy, 4/1981), lot 175; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2008), lot 81.
