Description
1796 Silver Myddelton Token, PR62
W-8905, Only 53 Believed Struck
1796 Myddelton Token, Silver, W-8905, R.6, PR62 NGC. An
exhaustive history of Philip Parry Price Myddelton's proposed
coinage, which are known to modern collectors as Myddelton tokens,
was presented at length by Richard Margolis in the December 1999
Colonial Newsletter. Due to his legal troubles, Myddelton
never got to see his proposed coinage for Kentucky reach mass
production, although small quantities of pieces struck in proof
format as samples were produced by Matthew Boulton at the Soho
Mint. 53 pieces were struck in silver, of which 50 were sent to
Myddelton. Later, 46 of those 50 pieces were returned to Soho and
distributed here and there until at least 1805, but primarily from
1796 to 1799. Modern collectors consider these pieces to be the
most beautiful early American-related coinage produced. The current piece displays deep, watery mirrors and is sharply struck, with blue, russet, and olive-gold toning overall. Eye appeal is excellent for the grade. Listed on page 43 of the 2026 Guide Book.
