Description

Garrett's '1796' Washington Repub Ameri Cent, MS64 Brown

1796 PENNY REPUB AMERI MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Baker-69. Closely related to the American colonial series, the Repub Ameri pieces are named for the lettering that appears on the scroll at the center of the reverse. The obverse has a bust of Washington facing right, with GEORGE WASHINGTON in large letters above, and BORN FEB 11 1732 DIED Dc 21 1799 in small letters below. The reverse has three lines of inscription around the small central motif: GENl OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES 1775, RESIGNd THE COMMd [sic] 1783 / ELECd PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789 / RESIGNED THE PRESIDENCY 1796.
Perhaps the latest date on the reverse led the Garrett cataloger to conclude that these pieces "were first issued in 1796," but that is clearly incorrect, as the date of Washington's death would have been unknown at the time. At least one example of Baker-69 is seen struck over a 1797 British penny, and they were apparently struck early in the 19th century.
A splendid, lightly mirrored Proof, as issued, with deep brown surfaces and a few minor spots. An attractive and highly desirable Washington piece.
Ex: Garrett Collection; Johns Hopkins University (Bowers and Ruddy, 3/1981), lot 1759.
