    Description

1796 Myddelton Token in Silver, W-8905
Rare Relic of a Failed Kentucky Settlement

1796 TOKEN Myddelton Token, Silver, PR PCGS Genuine. Breen-1073, W-8905, R.6. The PCGS number ending in .92 suggests Cleaning as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, the coin has the details of an Uncirculated proof specimen that has been cleaned, resulting in subdued, silver-gray surfaces with some light hairlines in the fields. Myddelton tokens were struck in silver and bronzed copper in small numbers by the Soho Mint in England. They were issued on behalf of Philip Parry Price Myddelton, who organized an ill-fated plan to settle a large tract of land in Kentucky with English artisans and skilled tradesmen. Perhaps as few as 20 silver pieces survive. Listed on pages 78-79 of the 2017 Guide Book.
