    1796 Silver Myddelton Token, PR63
    W-8905, Rare Kentucky Variety

1796 TOKEN Myddelton Token, Silver, PR63 PCGS. W-8905, R.6. The steam-powered presses of the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England produced this rare and exquisitely designed token for Philip Perry Price Myddelton. He owned a large area of land near the Ohio River in Kentucky, and attempted to settle a community with skilled English immigrants. Myddleton was soon arrested for "enticing artificers to emigrate" and spent a year in Newgate Prison. The motif of an inconsolable Britannia did not help his cause. This smooth and crisply struck specimen exhibits even golden-brown toning aside from glimpses of cobalt-blue patina in design recesses. Listed on page 79 of the 2020 Guide Book. Population: 6 in 63, 7 finer (7/19).
Ex: Philadelphia Americana Sale (Stack's-Bowers, 9/2009), lot 4175, which realized $13,800.
