Very Rare 1818 New Spain (Texas) Jola Half Real

1818 1/2RL New Spain (Texas) Jola Half Real, Small Planchet XF45 NGC. Despite the popular assumption, not all 18th-century American history took place on the Atlantic seaboard. This piece is one of 8,000 authorized (though actually production numbers are unknown and may have been much smaller) in 1818 to have been struck by Jose Antonio de la Garza, whose initials appear on the coin. Issued as small change coins current at a half real (or 6 and 1/4 cents), these apparently enjoyed a wide circulation in the San Antonio region. This coin is an historic artifact of the somewhat forgotten days of Spanish Texas in a time when American settlers in the region were becoming more common -- settlers who would eventually spearhead the campaign for American annexation of the area.
A dark brown specimen with inactive, dark surface scale in the protected areas of the obverse and reverse, flecked with deep mahogany. Sharp and well-struck with minor softness noted at the upper left obverse rim, the Lone Star insignia on the reverse is struck once, boldly and soundly, with no weakness or doubling. Indeed, this reverse is the nicest we have encountered. A barely noticeable planchet imperfection is noted at the 7 o'clock obverse position on the rim, this almost being unnoticeable due to the NGC holder. An exceptional specimen of this famous but very rare issue.(#661)
