Description
1820 North West Company Token, W-9250, XF45
Holed as Nearly Always
The Finest Certified
1820 TOKEN North West Brass XF45 NGC. W-9250, R.4. Holed as
nearly always with just two unholed specimens known. About 150 to
200 of these pieces survive in brass, and nearly all are in low
grades or badly corroded, and usually both. There are also about a
dozen pieces known in copper. The North West Company was a fur-trading business, headquartered in Montreal, that operated during the last two decades of the 18th century and first two decades of the 19th century. The company operated largely in Canada, although traded in what later became the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. Company explorers mapped the region before the famous exploration of Lewis and Clark. The North West Company eventually merged with Hudson's Bay Company, only a year after these coins were produced. The trading company eventually became a retail company, offering food and staples to the public. In the 1980s, employees and other investors purchased the company and brought back the old North West Company name, serving rural markets in Canada, Alaska, and elsewhere.
This specimen is far the finest certified, with a combined NGC and PCGS population of only 21 coins including two in Good, seven in VG, five in Fine, six in VF, and this XF45 specimen (3/12). Both sides have yellowish-brown surfaces with dark brown patina. A most attractive specimen, ranking among the finest known. Listed on page 74 of the 2012 Guide Book.
