Description

1787 Excelsior Copper, VF35
W-5785, Eagle on Globe Faces Left

1787 N YORK New York Excelsior Copper, Eagle on Globe Left, VF35 PCGS. W-5785, R.6. It is believed that the rare Excelsior coppers were produced by John Bailey to obtain a state coinage contract with New York. While Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont eventually authorized copper issues, New York never did. Machin's Mill and other private mints operated, nonetheless. The Excelsior coppers are closely related to the famous Brasher doubloons, and share the same engraver, John Bailey. The present richly detailed piece has granular dark brown fields and lighter tan highpoints. The obverse is well centered. The reverse is slightly misaligned toward 11 o'clock, although only the tops of BUS off the flan. The "Eagle Left" refers to the eagle on the globe, which faces right on a different rare variety. The large reverse eagle faces right on both varieties. Listed on page 36 of the 2026 Guide Book.
