1779 Rhode Island Ship Token, AU50
Pewter, VLUGTENDE Effaced
1779 Token Rhode Island Ship Token, No Wreath, Pewter,
Betts-562, W-1735, R.7, AU50 PCGS. Several variants
of this British propaganda medal are known in brass (occasionally
silvered) and pewter. The rarest has the word VLUGTENDE below the
ship and is known only in brass. Examples with that word removed,
such as the piece offered here, are infrequently seen in pewter and
occasionally in brass. The usual variety has a wreath added below
the ship with examples known in brass and pewter. This slate-gray
example is moderately granular and has a faded diagonal mark near
the top of the island that will serve as a pedigree reference for
future appearances. PCGS has certified three examples of this
pewter No Wreath variant that grade AU58, AU55, and AU50 (2/26).
