1796 Myddelton Token, PR62 Brown
W-8900, Splendid Copper Proof

1796 Token Myddelton Token, W-8900, Copper PR62 Brown PCGS. The inscription "P.P.P. Myddelton" refers to an Englishman, Philip Parry Price Myddelton, who held a significant parcel of land in Kentucky along the Ohio River. His plan was to entice British farmers and laborers to emigrate, establishing a community on his plantation. However, his plan ended in ruin and he was imprisoned for his actions.

On May 28, 1796, an English newspaper, The Worcester Herald, reported on the trial of Philip Parry Price Middleton: "This is the person who may be known to the public by his advertising in several provincial papers, under the name of Philip Parry Price Middleton, Esq. pretending to have certain tracts of land to dispose of in Kentucky, in America, and by distributing in many manufacturing towns in this kingdom, the most delusive and flattering proposals with a view to induce the farmer and manufacturing poor to emigrate to America. He caused some hundreds of poor, but industrious mechanics, and others, to sell all their little property, and with their families to quit their homes, and come up to London, upon the destructive and false notion of realizing fortunes, in a foreign country."

These tokens were produced in copper and silver, and the former are encountered less frequently than the latter. A splendid proof with excellent eye appeal that is created by the mix of deep steel brown surfaces, iridescent toning, and tinges of original red that is still evident around the reverse border. PCGS has certified 15 copper examples, all between PR65 and PR65, compared to 22 silver examples (2/26). Listed on page 43 of the 2026 Guide Book.
