Description
1776 Newman 2-C Pewter Dollar, MS61
CURRENCY Obverse
Among the Top Dozen Survivors
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, N. 2-C, W-8455,
R.3, MS61 NGC. Four obverse dies and two reverse dies were
utilized to produce the various Continental Dollar coins. Obverse 1
has CURENCY misspelled with just one R. Obverse 2 has that word
corrected as CURRENCY. Obverse 3 has the addition of EG FECIT in
the ring above the date. Obverse 4 has CURRENCEY misspelled another
way, and that was later corrected with a Y engraved over the errant
E and an ornament masking the additional Y. The corrected obverse
die is assigned a new Obverse 5 label. The first three reverses in
Eric P. Newman's attribution scheme are from a single physical die
with a dot below the small N in AMERICAN. Reverse A has all the
rings made up of dots. Reverse B is a modification of Reverse A
with the dotted rings connected to form solid rings, although
evidence of the former dots remains. Reverse C is an additional
modification with the rings strengthened to removed evidence of the
dotted rings. Reverse D appears with obverse dies 3, 4, and 5,
having a full-sized N in AMERICAN. The order of rings was corrected
on Reverse D.The composition of surviving pieces includes brass examples of Newman 1-A and 1-B, silver examples of Newman 1-C and 3-D, and pewter examples of all seven variants. Splashes of light gray mint luster remain in the protected areas of this well-defined example that shows trivial weakness on the sundial and some indistinct areas at the border. Census: 4 in 61, 15 finer (6/26). Listed on page 23 of the 2026 Guide Book. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
