    Description

Beautiful, Lightly Circulated Lord Baltimore Shilling

Undated (1658-1659) Lord Baltimore Shilling AU 50 PCGS. Large Head. Breen-64. Upon his inheritance of the colony of Maryland from his father, Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, ordered shillings, sixpences, and groats from the Royal Mint in London and shipped them across the Atlantic Ocean. Although the colonists in Maryland warmly received these pieces at first, by 1700 they had completely disappeared from circulation. This is an inviting About Uncirculated shilling that displays the characteristic die defect in the reverse field below II. We speculate that this feature was caused when an object fell into the coining press and, during striking, became impressed into the reverse die. While the reverse of this coin is not perfectly centered, the majority of the denticles are visible on both sides. The devices are respectably impressed and nicely detailed. The surfaces are free of post-production impairments and carry mottled yellow-russet patina that is concentrated largely about the raised features. An elusive Colonial issue that is rarely seen with this combination of surface preservation and eye appeal, this piece is listed on page 19 of the 1999 Guide Book.
