Description

Lovely Near-Mint Rhode Island Ship Token

Undated (1778-1779) Rhode Island Ship Token AU 58 PCGS. Brass. No Wreath. Breen-1139. This mysterious issue was produced to document the events surrounding the eventual British evacuation of Rhode Island on October 25, 1779. Breen (1988) does not know when or where these coins were produced, but their legends suggest that they may have been struck in England for a Dutch speaking audience. This is a rare issue, and few examples have survived in grades at or approaching the Mint State threshold. Tinges of original luster are evident in the more protected areas, the balance of the surfaces blend honey-tan and copper-brown toning. A small area of darker color is noted near the right reverse rim, but there are no other mentionable distractions. Remarkably well defined in all areas. Listed on page 29 of the current Guide Book. (NGC ID# CX5S, PCGS# 579)
