Description

1903 Louisiana/McKinley Proof Gold Dollar
In Original Signed and Sealed Mint Certificate

1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley Gold Dollar Proof, Uncertified, With Original Signed and Wax-Sealed Mint Certificate. A total of 17,500 1903 McKinley gold dollars were distributed, and the first 100 of these pieces struck were produced in proof format. The proofs were encased in a signed certificate commemorating their coinage which was signed by Coiner Rhine R. Freed and Philadelphia Mint Superintendent John M. Landis, and sealed with the Landis' wax seal. Today, most of these 100 proofs have long ago been removed from their frames and certificates for the purpose of certification. Pieces remaining in their frames are very rare, and some such survivors show damage to the wax seal. The present piece's wax seal is fully intact, and the coin and signed certificate well preserved. Some spotting on the frame glass makes it slightly foggy, but the coin appears to show ample field reflectivity with deep orange-gold and amber patina. Without doubt, this is one of the most interesting items in the entire classic commemorative series, and one we rarely get to handle due to its rarity.
