    Wonderful MS66 1903 Louisiana
    Purchase-McKinley Gold Dollar

1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley MS66 PCGS. The time was 1803. For a price of about $28 per square mile (4.5 cents an acre), the United States bought from France an area of 828,000 square miles. Doubling the United States in size, the purchase comprised basically all of the territory between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, an event known in America as the Louisiana Purchase--and in French as "la vente de la Louisiane," or "Louisiana sale."
To celebrate the centennial of this seminal event in U.S. history, the Mint in 1903 issued its first gold commemorative coin in two versions, one depicting Thomas Jefferson, president at the time of the purchase, the other portraying recently martyred President William McKinley. From the authorized mintage of 250,000 gold dollars between the two varieties, all but 17,500 of each were melted. This lustrous piece has wonderful golden-orange color with tinges of hazel. Tiny die cracks from the rim to peripheral letters are noted on each side. Certified in a green-label holder.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# BYLE, PCGS# 7444)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
