    Description

1904 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS67
    Conditionally Rare Early Gold Commemorative

1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS67 NGC. CAC. The Lewis and Clark commemorative gold dollars were issued in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Exposition, held in Portland, Oregon in 1905. The coins were initially struck the year before the Exposition, in 1904, and then again in 1905, creating two different issues. The former was produced to the extent of 25,000 pieces (plus 28 coins for assay purposes), but 15,003 were left unsold following the event, and were subsequently melted.

The pieces that were distributed primarily went to the general public as souvenirs of the Exposition, with the result that a significant portion of the surviving population is affected by careless handling and storage. High-grade examples are significantly scarcer than is often realized.

This representative is a rare Superb Gem example, with nearly flawless preservation and sharply struck motifs. Tinges of deep apricot-gold color accent primarily yellow-gold surfaces, giving this piece exceptional eye appeal. Census: 29 in 67 (3 in 67 , 4 in 67+ ), 1 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# BYLF, PCGS# 7447)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
