1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS67
Rarest Commemorative Gold Dollar Issue
Sole CAC Example

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar MS67 PCGS. CAC. The surfaces on this top-grade 1905 Lewis and Clark gold dollar are, as expected and desired, essentially perfect in terms of post-Mint distractions. Glowing luster highlights both sides with color ranging from honey-gold to warm apricot-gold. The profiles of both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are free of mentionable marks, a trait far separating this Superb Gem from most of its kind. Were it not for a couple of minor copper alloy spots in the planchet, as made, we suspect this incredibly preserved coin might have a shot at an MS68 grade. As it is, it is among only four in MS67 at PCGS, and with the CAC endorsement it is the sole example as of this writing (2/16). The last MS67 PCGS specimen of this issue we handled -- a different piece, lacking the CAC green sticker -- was lot 3383 in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2015), which brought $37,600.

This coin is remarkable for another reason as well, however: Grade-for-grade, the 1905 Lewis and Clark gold dollars are far more elusive than their 1904 counterparts -- Bowers suggests 20 percent rarer, but we believe it is higher than that -- and both the 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark gold are far rarer overall than any other gold dollar commemorative issues. This is thus the finest example (or tied for finest, depending on the weight one assigns to the CAC approval) of the rarest commemorative gold dollar issue.
