    Description

1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS66
A Highly Lustrous and Colorful Example

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. The Lewis and Clark Expedition set out in 1804, following the 1803 conclusion of the Louisiana Purchase, to discover the mythic Northwest Passage that would connect the New World to the Old World via a northwestern sea route. The 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition, which opened on June 1 in Portland, Oregon, was conceived as a commemoration of the expedition and an observance of the first recorded sighting of the Pacific Ocean by those of European descent. It quickly evolved, however, into a world's fair emphasizing the Pacific Ocean, the West Coast states, the natural resources of the region, and the potential for trade with Asia.
This 1905 Lewis and Clark has rich mint luster cascading over both sides and deep, even reddish-gold color. Prominent die flow lines, visible with magnification around the peripheries, make the coin appear to have a textured appearance. Both portraits are free of mentionable abrasions, as expected for the Premium Gem grade. PCGS has certified only two coins finer than the present specimen (1/09).
