    Description

1905 Lewis and Clark Gold Dollar, MS67
Extremely Rare at This Grade Level
    Tied for Finest Known

1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS67 NGC. The 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark commemorative gold dollars, struck in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Exposition, held in Portland, Oregon, in 1905, are the scarcest of all the gold dollar issues in the classic commemorative series. The two dates had virtually identical distributions (about 10,000 coins each), but the 1905 is significantly rarer in high grades. The typical piece shows evidence of improper handling and poor storage, with an unusually high number of AU examples known. Mint State pieces are primarily limited to the lower end of grade range, and the issue's availability begins to decline sharply at the Gem level.

The Superb Gem representative here offered ranks as one of just four so-graded coins at NGC, with none finer; PCGS has likewise seen only three examples in this grade, also with none finer (9/14). The strike is bold, with shimmering luster that is rich in frosty golden color. A wispy vertical die crack that bisects the obverse portrait (Lewis) should not be mistaken for a pinscratch or other post-striking anomaly, as the surfaces are virtually pristine. The sheer rarity of this piece alone demands the undivided attention of the classic commemorative specialist. Census: 4 in 67, 0 finer (9/14).
