Description
Outstanding Superb Gem 1915-S Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle
1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 NGC. Evelyn Beatrice Longman, a talented and prizewinning sculptress, received the commission to design the Panama-Pacific quarter eagle. An untimely illness, however, forced her design to revert to the Mint, where Charles Barber scrapped her previous efforts and submitted his own mythologically charged obverse design, which was paired with a defiant eagle reverse by George T. Morgan. Though unmistakably Barber's work, the Columbia and hippocampus have attracted less criticism over the decades than the rest of his oeuvre. The mustard-gold Superb Gem offered here presents the design in its best possible light. Though Columbia's head is a touch soft as always, the overall visual appeal is strong, and the luminous fields are beautifully preserved. Among the best available today, as neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a numerically finer example (10/07).
