    Description

    1915-S Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle, MS67
    Iconic Exposition Souvenir

1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 NGC. In 1915, commemorative coinage at the U.S. Mint had yet to become a regular pursuit. Commemorative issues were primarily produced in conjunction with major expositions and fairs -- the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (Columbian half dollar and Isabella quarter), Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis (Jefferson and McKinley gold dollars), Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition (souvenir gold dollars). The occasion in 1915 was the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, held in San Francisco. The local federal branch mint struck five commemorative coins for this event, including a half dollar, gold dollar, quarter eagle, and two varieties of $50 "slugs." Distribution totals varied widely between the various issues, with the higher-denominations seeing stunted sales. This is a Superb Gem example of the Pan-Pac quarter eagle, which had a distribution of only 6,749 pieces. The design is boldly rendered, and the frosty surfaces display unabraded wheat-gold luster. Among the finest certified by either service (11/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# BYLP, PCGS# 7450)
