Affordable 1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar Octagonal, AU Details

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. The ceremonial strikings that accompany most modern commemoratives have their roots in similar pomp that accompanied classic commemorative issues. Swiatek-Breen (1981) recounts the illustrious dignitaries who participated in early coinings of the octagonal Panama-Pacific fifties: the first was struck by T.W.H. Shanahan, Superintendent of the San Francisco Mint; the second was struck by Charles C. Moore, President of the Panama-Pacific Exhibition; and later participants included Representative Julius Kahn, a Republican from California who sponsored the bill authorizing the commemoratives. Also involved were master numismatic promoter Farran Zerbe and the then-Mayor of San Francisco, James Rolph, Jr.
Though no famous name is attached to the present example, it is a highly desirable piece nonetheless. The luminous yellow-orange surfaces show hairlines from a past cleaning, a measure of friction affects the well struck devices, and minor damage is present at the upper right dolphin on the obverse. Still, as one of only 645 pieces in the issue's net mintage, it remains a coveted exemplar from one of the rarest and most distinctive of America's commemorative issues.
