    Impressive 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Octagonal MS63

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS63 NGC. Struck on the eve of America's involvement in the First World War, symbolism plays an important part in the coin's design. On the obverse, the Greek helmet is pushed back on Minerva's head in a ready but not fully combative posture. The owl on the reverse signifies watchfulness, being surrounded on the octagonal coins by a series of dolphins in reference to the Panama Canal. Although equal quantities of round and octagonal fifties were produced, the novelty of the octagonal shape and its connection with gold rush issues lead to greater sales. Still, a paltry 645 pieces garnered the $100 price tag.
This dazzling, Select representative possesses bountiful luster and a subtle reddish patina embraces both sides. Only under close inspection are a few microscopic blemishes on the central devices evident. Opting for a costlier higher grade would be unlikely to produce a more appealing example of this classic commemorative gold issue.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# BYHP, PCGS# 7452)
