1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar, MS65
Scarcer Round Type
Unsurpassed Color and Mint Luster
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS65 PCGS. The
footprint of the Panama-Pacific Exposition was nothing short of
impressive. Covering 635 acres over an area that stretched more
than two miles along the waterfront and roughly a half-mile wide,
the fair consisted of eight seventy-foot-tall palaces, five
expansive courts, numerous gardens, and other buildings and
concessions. Approximately 19 million people passed through the
gates of the PPIE before they were shut on December 4.The absolute scale was one of the defining characteristics of the fair, which also boasted fantastic works of art, exhibits of cutting-edge science, and pavilions from around the world. Just as impressive are the two-and-a-half ounce "quintuple eagles," which were the centerpiece commemorative coinage for the event and fitting souvenirs in terms of size visual impact. The formats were inspired by the U.S. Assay Office of Gold "Octagonal ingots" issued under Augustus Humbert in the early Gold Rush days and by the lesser-known Wass-Molitor fifty dollar Rounds privately issued in the mid-1850s.
Exceptional overall quality is the hallmark of this attractive, high-luster fifty dollar Round. The rich-gold surfaces show only minuscule post-mint marks and no abrasions, while the cartwheel luster rolls across the frosty and smooth fields and devices. It is a well-struck and beautifully preserved coin -- one of 483 pieces distributed to dealers and the public, with the balance of the 1,500-piece mintage melted as unsold. The Round variant is considerably scarcer than the Octagonal format, a fact that has not escaped the attention of gold specialists in recent years. Just two pieces are certified numerically finer by PCGS. Population: 20 in 65 (2 in 65+), 2 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N10218)
