Description
Outstanding Superb Gem 1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar
1915-S G$1 Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar MS67 PCGS. Though Charles Keck's design for the Panama-Pacific gold dollar is widely praised today, it received mixed reviews in its own time. Q. David Bowers (1991) quotes the August 1915 edition of The Numismatist, in which an unnamed writer disparages the portrait, finding it inconsistent with generally accepted personifications of Labor. The same writer describes the Barber-Morgan collaborations on the half dollar and quarter eagle as "attractive" and "of considerable artistic merit," respectively, suggesting that he preferred an academic approach to commemorative design.Extraordinary eye appeal and exemplary preservation converge on this special and spectacular commemorative. The surfaces, canary-gold with elements of straw and butter-yellow, offer lovely luster. Even under magnification, the fields and solidly struck devices show only a handful of minuscule ticks. Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a numerically finer representative (10/07).
