Panama-Pacific International Exposition
Shreve & Co. Copper and Class Panama-Pacific Coin Frame.
This lot contains no coins, but it does include an original
Panama-Pacific commemorative coin frame. The hand-hammered copper
frame is 10" by 8" and in excellent condition with its inserts,
glass, screws, and velvet interior intact. The base of the holder
is inscribed SHREVE & CO / SAN FRANCISCO / MAKERS. Experts
estimate that only 30 or so Shreve & Co. Copper frame holders
exist today with a single slot for each of the five different
Panama-Pacific varieties (the half dollar, gold dollar, quarter
eagle, and round and octagonal fifty dollar). Perhaps another 25
short-set holders (without the two fifty dollar varieties) are
known, along with perhaps six sets with two of each variety,
intended to display both the obverse and reverse. An informative
2005 Stack's brochure accompanies the lot.
