Description

Brass Pattern 1925 Norse Medal MS64

1925 Norse Medal--Brass Pattern--MS64 PCGS. CAC. This fascinating piece has the 1 1/4" diameter of the Thin and Thick silver Norse medals. The thickness is unknown due to encapsulation, but is presumably 1/20", the same as Thin medals. This is because the Thin medals were struck first, May 21-23, 1925. The 1/16" Thick medals were struck in late May and June. Eventually, 100 matte proof 1" gold Norse medals were struck, along with 75 medals in 2 5/8" silver-plated copper-bronze.
The chronology and diameter suggest that the present piece is a Mint pattern for the Thin Norse medal. It is toned golden-brown but retains glimpses of the original gold color within design crevices. The strike is exacting, and there are no relevant marks. PCGS has certified a single brass pattern (this piece), along with just one copper die trial and a single (silver?) uniface die trial. Presumably unique, and the future centerpiece of an advanced collection of classic silver commemoratives.
