1892 Columbian Half, PR65
One of Only 103 Proofs Struck

1892 50C Columbian PR65 PCGS. CAC. Proof Columbian halves are an interesting (and rare) issue. There were 103 proofs struck in 1892 and the striking sequence of these proofs was unusual to say the least. The first 100 pieces were proofs, then the 400th coin (to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the 'Discovery' of America), followed by the 1492nd coin, and finally the 1892nd coin. An unusual striking order, but one that clearly underscores the commemorative nature of the coin.
As with all proof Columbians the waves, planking, globes, and borders are fully detailed. Morgan's initial, just below the rigging, is fully brought up as well. The fields are deeply reflective and the coin's proof status is apparent in spite of the irregular dashes of charcoal-gray and blue toning on each side. Strong magnification will be required to discern the tiny field marks that keep this Gem from an even higher grade. Population: 6 in 65, 4 finer (8/10).
