Description
1893 Isabella Quarter, MS68
Brilliant Luster Beneath Rainbow Toning
1893 25C Isabella Quarter MS68 NGC. CAC. Although important
celebrations such as the 1876 national centennial preceded
Chicago's Columbian Exposition, that 1893 event was the granddaddy
of World's fairs. The Columbian Exposition was organized to mark
the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the New
World. Queen Isabella I of Spain and her husband, Ferdinand, the
rulers of Castile and Aragon, sponsored the voyage, receiving land
in the New World in exchange for financial backing. At the fair, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla illuminated the event with Alternating Current, the post office issued their first commemorative stamps, and the U.S. Mint introduced their first commemorative coins. One of those commemoratives is this amazing Superb Gem Isabella quarter from the Eric P. Newman Collection. Designed by Charles Barber, the Isabella quarter pays tribute to Queen Isabella, and recognizes the Board of Lady Managers at the Exposition. The reverse design pays tribute to women's industry.
Known today as the Isabella quarter, this piece has the denomination appearing as COLUMBIAN QUAR. DOL. Much like the fair itself, this piece shines brightly with its brilliant mint luster, extraordinary design definition, and alternating bands of toning that range from deep blue to russet, turquoise, and gold. Census: 9 in 68 (1 in 68+ ★ ), 1 finer (10/13).

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
