1893 Isabella Quarter, PR61
Rare, 'Unofficial' Proof Striking
Just 103 Proofs Believed Minted

1893 25C Isabella Quarter PR61 NGC. Although there have been at least 60 auction appearances of Isabella quarters cataloged as Proof coins over the past 20 years, there are no official mint records confirming a proof mintage and some experts still debate the issue. PCGS and NGC recognize proofs. Anthony Swiatek wrote in his 1981 reference, "It appears 103 of these were proofs: the first 100 and nos. 400, 1492, and 1892. That gives us 24,088 business strikes in addition to the 103 proofs." An additional 23 coins were struck for assay. The situation is similar to the Columbian half dollars, where the initial mintage of 100 pieces for each date have been confirmed as proofs.

This attractive example is certainly a proof -- meticulously struck, with deeply mirrored fields, wide square rims, and exceptionally sharp definition on every intricate detail of Isabella's snood and the reverse figure's spindle, hair, and distaff. Mostly brilliant, a light halo of reddish-umber toning embraces the rims and margins. A few light lines and marks in the fields determine the assigned grade. Census: 2 in 61, 42 finer (3/15).
