Description

1893 Isabella Quarter, PR65
Very Rare in Proof

1893 25C Isabella Quarter PR65 NGC. A bevy of delectable colors grace the surfaces of this scarce quarter, ranging from rose to grape to save and sunrise-yellow. Razor-sharp definition defines both sides. The Isabella quarter is a highly unusual issue in the pantheon of American Commemorative coinage. It is the only American coin to depict a foreign monarch, Queen Isabella of Spain, and remains the only commemorative quarter ever to be issued. It commemorated the Board of Lady Managers, established by the work of Susan B. Anthony to represent women in the exhibition's administration, making its target more focused than most early Classic Commemoratives, which recognized the exhibition as a whole and depicted its main themes. (An exception to this is the 1900 Washington-Lafayette dollar, which did not specifically mention the 1900 Paris exposition it debuted at, but just the Lafayette status that was unveiled at that event that the coin commemorated). The Isabella quarter is scarce in its own right, but the Proof designation amplifies this unavailability. While no records exist of Proof strikings, some have been certified in that format from both services, including some with the Cameo designation at NGC. However, few are as fine as this superlative survivor. Census: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+), 5 finer (12/25).
