Description
Dramatically Toned Lafayette Dollar MS65
1900 $1 Lafayette Dollar MS65 PCGS. CAC. DuVall 2-C. This slightly better DuVall variety is identified by a recut second S in STATES on the obverse. Beautiful golden-brown, apple-green, gold, and cherry-red enrich this satiny Gem. The strike is exemplary, and the only visible imperfection is a subtle graze on the left reverse field. Among the many curious incidents in the history of the Lafayette dollar is a Treasury melting of 14,000 pieces in 1945, decades after the 14 sealed bags first occupied government vaults, but shortly before Chicago dealer Aubrey Bebee attempted to purchase the hoard from the Treasury.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# BYKW, PCGS# 9222, GSID# 10321)
