Description

Peripherally Toned Gem Lafayette Dollar

1900 $1 Lafayette Dollar MS65 PCGS. DuVall 1-B. Lovely tobacco-brown and aquamarine toning adorns the borders of this thoroughly lustrous and crisply impressed silver dollar. The fields are gorgeously preserved, while contact is minor and limited to small marks on Washington's jaw and the lower front of the horse. All Lafayette dollars were struck on a single day, December 14, 1899, to commemorate the exact centennial of Washington's passing. Perhaps the Mint struggled to reach the deadline, which helps explain the existence of several positional die varieties involving the lettering and branch.(Registry values: N4719)
