Description

Appealing 1900 Lafayette Gem Dollar
DuVall 1-B

1900 $1 Lafayette Dollar MS65 PCGS. DuVall 1-B. The leaf points between the 1 and 9 in the date, and the A in DOLLAR is low and leans left. John Winkelmann writes in the August 2007 Numismatist that Congress presented an equestrian statue of Major General Lafayette to France. To help fund the monument, Congress authorized the minting and sale of a commemorative dollar, with the busts of Lafayette and George Washington on the obverse and a mounted Lafayette on the reverse.
Soft luster exudes from the silver-gray surfaces of this Gem specimen, and an attentive strike imparts sharp definition to the design feathers. A few light handling marks are consistent with the grade designation. Great overall technical quality and aesthetic appeal.(Registry values: N4719)
