Description
1900 Lafayette Dollar, MS66
A Nicely Toned, Obviously Original Example
1900 $1 Lafayette Dollar MS66 NGC. DuVall 1-B. This is an
awe inspiring example of this popular, crown-sized early
commemorative. Commemoratives have long been one of the most
popular series for collectors and the appearance of a premium
quality Lafayette has always stirred excitement. Both sides are
beautifully toned in scattered emerald-green and russet colors. The
underlying surfaces exhibit a vibrant, satiny appearance, being
remarkably free of coin-to-coin contact. The typical Lafayette
dollar, an issue that was sold in great numbers to the
non-collecting general public, is often found lightly circulated
and all too often cleaned. Even a pleasing MS63 specimen can be
difficult to find. High-end coins, above the grade of MS65, are of
the utmost rarity and quickly absorbed by the serious commemorative
collector. To this we add that the Lafayette dollar is one of the
keys to the U.S. commemorative set in the finer Mint State grades;
few coins display surfaces as smooth and blatantly original as
those of the present MS66 specimen. Destined for the finest set.
