1922 Grant With Star Half Dollar, MS67
One of the Finest Known

1922 50C Grant With Star MS67 NGC. Untoned surfaces contain just a touch of weakness on the highest points of the hair. Luster is blazing. This coin hails from the With Star variety, a rare and interesting entrant into the commemorative cannon. By 1922, commemorative makers had figured out they could make a number of different varieties for collectors to boost sales. Dealer Farran Zerbe started this in 1915 with the five different types of Panama-Pacific coins, and saw new life in 1921 and 1922. In 1921, 100,000 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary halves were restruck with a new date that did not correspond to the anniversary being celebrated. While this didn't work, the addition of 2★ 4 to the 1921 Missouri Centennial half dollars to represent its status as the 24th state did result in additional sales, so it was repeated with the 1921 Alabama commemoratives and with the present Grant issues. The Centenary Memorial Association pushed for its inclusion on the Grant coins, but initially intended for only the gold dollar. When the 5,000 With Star half dollars arrived (not including the six assay specimens), it was, "a bonus which greatly surprised the committee." This already small mintage was not fully distributed, with 750 hitting the melting pot. Considering the distribution of No Star half dollars is 67,405, almost 16 No Star coins was distributed for every one With Star example. The Superb Gem status of the present offering similarly catapults it into an even more elite class, as few equivalent or finer examples exist. Census: 17 in 67 (2 in 67+, 2 in 67 ), 0 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N10218)
