Description

Originally Toned Gem 1926 Sesquicentennial Half

1926 50C Sesquicentennial MS65 PCGS. The mint occasionally overestimates how popular certain coins will be with the public. That happened to proofs from 1859-1860, modern mint products, and it certainly happened with the Sesquicentennial half dollar. Just over a million pieces were struck in anticipation of brisk sales at $1 per coin, but 859,408 pieces were returned to the mint to be melted. Of those 140,592 pieces sold, few were set aside in pristine condition. This is a lovely example that show excellent mint luster with an irregular overlay of golden-brown and russet toning on the obverse, and golden-lilac color on the reverse.(Registry values: N2998)
