1935 Hudson Half Dollar, Rare MS67
    Vivid Border Toning

1935 50C Hudson MS67 PCGS. Struck to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Hudson, New York, the Hudson Sesquicentennial half dollar was fairly well-received by collectors, despite the moderate obscurity of the event celebrated. The initial purchase price from the Mint was $1 per coin (plus postage), but this did not last long as a sellout occurred just four days after the opening of sales. Less than a month later, examples could be purchased from dealers for twice their original Mint cost.

Congress authorized the coinage of 10,000 examples, all of which were struck, plus eight additional pieces for assay purposes. All were sold. Surviving examples are moderately available in grades through MS65, but the population thins at MS66 and anything finer is a notable rarity. This Superb Gem is among the finest known. Well-struck and satiny, the central regions show dusky champagne-gray color, while the peripheries show vivid crimson, amber, and forest-green toning from the original cardboard distribution holder. Population: 14 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer (6/15).(Registry values: N4719)
