Description

Superb Gem 1935 Spanish Trail Half

1935 50C Spanish Trail MS67 NGC. CAC. Dealer L.W. Hoffecker may have been influenced by the rebuses on ancient Greek coins when he chose a cow's head to represent the explorer Cabeza de Vaca in lieu of a portrait. While many 20th century numismatic scholars dismissed the motif, others, perhaps frustrated by the fanciful portraits of Columbus and others on coinage, supported the idea. This is a lustrous Superb Gem blanketed in silver-blue and gold-orange toning with dots of crimson at the rims. Well-defined and attractive. The present coin has been awarded the CAC sticker, verifying the awarded grade. Currently, CAC has verified 18 specimens in MS67, with none finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
