Description

1936-S Cincinnati Half Dollar, MS67
Among the Finest at Both Services

1936-S 50C Cincinnati MS67 PCGS. Prominent numismatist Thomas G. Melish takes his place in history as the originator of 1936 Cincinnati commemorative half dollars. Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding the coins' conception and production were questionable. The issue supposedly celebrated the city's 50-year contribution to the art of music. However, the ploy was a money-making scheme through and through. Sets could be acquired for a then-record high of $7.75, and thousands were withheld and sold on the secondary market for significant premiums. Initially, Melish even sought to distribute production across the three mints such that the Denver issue would be great rarity, resulting in greater profits. Instead, each facility coined 5,000 Cincinnati halves plus a small number of assay pieces.

Remarkably, this Superb Gem is one of eight top-graded survivors, the population being split equally between the two leading certification firms (1/16). Softly frosted surfaces have largely brilliant interiors that cede to dappled specks of multicolor patina around the borders. A few trivial marks are visible only with magnification.(Registry values: N4719)
