1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar, SP67
Confirmed Specimen Finish, Lightly Toned

1938 50C New Rochelle, Specimen Finish, SP67 PCGS Secure. The 250th anniversary of the French Huguenots who settled on land sold to them by John Pell in New Rochelle, New York is celebrated on the 1938 New Rochelle half dollar. The issue comes with different finishes -- proofs have a matte surface -- but perhaps more popular are the few Specimen coins that were struck on proof planchets with polished dies that display a flashy, chromelike silver finish. These pieces are thought to be among 50 coins produced for members of the Coinage Committee, Westchester County Coin Club, and associated dignitaries.

This example has acquired some light, attractive reddish-tan toning at the margins to complement equally pleasing ivory-silver centers. Flecks of deeper toning punctuate the sharply struck, well-preserved mirrored fields. Diagnostic die polish lines are visible under magnification, seen on all of the Specimen pieces that are now recognized by both PCGS and NGC. The strike is essentially full on all but the center vein of the fleur-de-lis. Population: 11 in 67 (2 in 67+), 1 finer (3/18).
