1936 York Commemorative Half Dollars
Three Coins, MS67, MS68, and Uncertified
Includes Original Holders and Rare Ephemera
Three-Piece Lot of 1936 York Half Dollars With Original
Ephemera. This lot includes: 1936 50C York MS68 NGC;
1936 50C York MS67 NGC, and 1936 50C York,
Uncertified, in framed map of York County issued by The York
County Tercentenary Commission. These are spectacular survivors
from this one-off local-interest silver commemorative issue
celebrating the 300th year anniversary of the founding of York
County in Maine. Both certified coins display hues of amber,
burgundy and emerald in a tab toning pattern. The MS68 example (NGC
1665100-012) has no numerically finer pieces at NGC, whereas the
MS67 example (NGC 3752349-007) has only 60 numerically finer pieces
(12/25). The framed map coin represents one of the first 100 pieces
struck, which were sealed in these commemorative maps, although
this piece is not numbered in the lower right corner.The coins and ephemera presented here were curated as an educational exhibit that included some of the rarest original materials related to the York halves. Photographs of the exhibit are included with the lot, along with the exhibitor's presentation description of the display. The specific original materials present include:
1) The original York County Tercentenary Commemorative Coin Commission letter announcing the coinage of the York halves.
2) An original order blank.
3) An original Subscription Application for the coin, with "ordered 7/8/36" written at the top.
4) Two different order acknowledgements.
5) Three original cardboard five-slot holders, with one original tissue paper insert.
6) Three original mailing envelopes
Any of these materials is scarce to rare, and the whole of them presented here is a remarkable offering.
