    Very Rare Haseltine Silver Restrike
    1861 Confederate Cent, PR58 Details

1861 1C Confederate States of America Cent, Haseltine Silver Restrike -- Rim Bumps, Polished -- ANACS. PR58 Details. Breen-8007. Robert Lovett, Jr. was the engraver for the 1861 Confederate cent. In 1874, Captain John W. Haseltine purchased the dies from Lovett and struck small numbers of examples in gold, silver, and copper. Breen (1988) states the silver mintage, per Haseltine, was either five or twelve pieces, in any event much rarer than the copper restrikes (Breen-8008). Those, in turn, are vastly rarer than the Bashlow bronze restrikes from defaced dies, the "Confederate cent" familiar to collectors. The present well struck silver Haseltine restrike is from perfect dies, but we note a small obverse rim bump at 4 o'clock, and both sides are moderately glossy from cleaning.
