Scott Restrike Confederate Half Dollar, MS62
    Dated 1861, Struck in 1879

1861 50C Scott Restrike MS62 PCGS. Breen-8002. The Scott Restrike Confederate halves were made in 1879 and are the closest most collectors can come to owning one of the four 1861 originals. Scott's firm overstruck the planed-down reverses of 500 1861-O Seated halves with the original Confederate half die, purchased indirectly from New Orleans Mint Chief Coiner B.F. Taylor. The striking somewhat flattened the host obverses, as can be seen on the present coin, which has AU details on the Seated side. The Confederate side has light golden-brown toning and shows incompleteness of strike on CONFEDERATE STATES. Listed on page 404 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 31 in 62, 20 finer (11/12). (NGC ID# 2C4R, PCGS# 340402)
